The city of Airdrie, located in Alberta province of Canada, is one of the smaller towns in Alberta. It is only thirty-three square kilometers and population of just under 35,000. There are approximately 13,000 homes occupied by permanent residents of Airdrie. With its permanent residents in mind Airdrie has began the first steps in an initiative to recreate its city infrastructure.

 

Airdrie has created a task force to improve city roads which includes new road construction and road preservation and reclamation. Airdrie engineering services maintains and facilitates annual road improvement and rehabilitation projects. Improvements are based on the amount of traffic and how economically feasible the project is. Rehab projects are decided by need and are controlled through a pavement management system.

 

Airdrie is conveniently set on the Queen Elizabeth II Highway, which happens to be the most active stretch of highway in Alberta. The Queen Elizabeth, as it is more affectionately known, connects Calgary to Edmonton thus making it a very important, albeit small, transportation hub. This makes Airdrie a town full of busy commuters, there are many families with multiple cars. Many Airdrie storage facilities act as a second garage to many homes. The population is steadily growing as there are many communities currently under construction in Airdrie such as Williamstown, Reunion, Gateway Industrial Park, Canals, Bayside and Mackenzie Pointe, Prairie Spring, Cooperstown sand Luxstone just to name a few. These communities are going to lead to increased infrastructure development and will allow the Airdrie to grow and participate in trade and commerce in the area. The Queen Elizabeth II Highways for many years bisected the city is a crucial element in trade to the north and to the south. Airdrie has also begun discussing the implementation of a rail transit system that will connect it with downtown Calgary. With all the innovation in transportation, Airdrie is leading the industry in infrastructure modifications and advancement.
