Maaco Bowl Las Vegas
08-20-11

Las Vegas, NV (Sports Network) - It was far from pretty, but 10th-ranked Boise State posted a 26-3 victory over No. Domoic Brown Jersey . 20 Utah at the 19th annual Maaco Bowl Las Vegas. Kellen Moore connected on 28-of-38 passes for 339 yards with two touchdowns for the Broncos (12-1), who overcame four turnovers -- two of which were committed in the first quarter by the junior quarterback that finished fourth in the Heisman voting. For whatever reason, the first quarter didnt start out well, Moore said. Utah made some plays, we screwed up on a few things. Fortunately for us, football is a long game and the defense played well in that first quarter to keep us in it. Doug Martin had 147 yards on 17 carries and it was his 84-yard touchdown run that sparked Boise State. Austin Pettis caught 12 passes for 147 yards and a score in the win, the Broncos fourth straight over Utah. Terrance Cain threw for just 93 yards on 10-of-24 efficiency for the Utes (10-3), who had won nine straight postseason games, the longest active streak in the nation. Cain was tabbed the starter after Jordan Wynn had shoulder surgery earlier this month. When you play a team the caliber of Boise State, youve got to be much better than we were tonight, said Utah head coach Kyle Whittingham. I thought our defense hung in there for a while and then Kellen Moore got things going with their offense. Boise State limited Utah to 200 yards of total offense and eight first downs. It was an unsettling start for the Broncos as Moore fumbled on the opening drive of the game. Defensive tackle Neli Aasa recovered the ball to set Utah up at the Boise State 20. The Utes, however, came away with no points after Joe Phillips missed a 39-yard field goal. Cain lost a fumble on the Utes next possession, and Boise State called a fake punt/pass for embattled kicker Kyle Brotzman on fourth down at the Utah 47. Brotzman, of course, gained unwanted notoriety for missing makeable field goals near the end of regulation and in overtime in a 34-31 loss at Nevada on November 26 that cost the school a potential shot at a national championship. The seniors struggles in the state continued as he dropped what would have been a first-down completion. Chaz Walker then picked off Moore later in the first quarter and Utah converted the turnover into a 44-yard Phillips field goal with 56 seconds left. Walker forced a fumble on the Broncos next series, but the Utes eventually punted the ball away. On the first play of the ensuing Boise State drive, Martin scampered 84 yards to the end zone. Boise State scored nine points in the late stages of the second quarter to take a 16-3 lead. After Brotzman made a 29-yard field goal with 2:27 remaining, the Broncos got the ball back on a punt and Moore found Tyler Shoemaker for a 25-yard touchdown with 18 seconds showing on the clock. The Broncos failed on the two-point conversion. Reggie Dunn returned the kickoff at the outset of the third quarter 40 yards to the Utah 46. If not for a tackle by Brotzman, Dunn could have went the distance. But Shaky Smithson coughed up the ball after a 23-yard gain on a short toss from Cain. On the Broncos next possession, Moore hit Pettis in stride for 46 yards, but Brian Blechen stripped the ball from behind at the Utah two-yard line. One of Pettis teammates failed to secure the fumble before it rolled out of the end zone, resulting in a touchback. After the Utes went three-and-out, Moore threw an 18-yard strike to Pettis to increase Boise States lead to 23-3. Cain lost another fumble in enemy territory and the Broncos looked to tack on three more points, but Brotzmans bid from 27 yards away was blocked. Utah marched to the Boise State 19 before the drive stalled. Phillips came on to attempt a 36-yard field goal on the first play of the fourth quarter, but his kick went astray. Brotzman drilled a 21-yarder to finish the scoring with 8:49 remaining. GAME NOTES:Boise State amassed 543 yards on offense....Shoemaker had 89 yards on five receptions...Utah was 2-of-13 on third-down conversions...The Broncos improved to 7-4 in bowl games, while the Utes dropped to 12-4...Utahs last postseason loss came against Wisconsin in the 1996 Copper Bowl...This was Boise States last game as a member of the Western Athletic Conference. Seeing his Florida Marlins teammates rally for a the 4-3 win after he left following a seventh-inning collision with Bill Hall made the all-star shortstop feel a little better. "The game was right there," he said. "After I left the game, my teammates got a little fire. They did it for me. It feels good when your teammates have your back, and I respect that." Chris Coghlan homered and drove in two runs to back a solid outing by Ricky Nolasco (1-0), who allowed two runs in eight innings to spoil Houstons home opener. "He was very efficient," Marlins manager Edwin Rodriguez said. "Everything was working for him, breaking ball, changeup, fastball was going 92 to 94. He did an outstanding job. He made the pitches when he had to against good hitters. That was an outstanding job by Ricky." Leo Nunez allowed two hits, including a homer in the ninth, before pinch runner Jason Bourgeois was caught stealing to end the game and give Nunez his second save. The injury to Ramirez occurred when Hall slid late and to the side of second base, leaving both players in the dirt. Hall finally got up while Ramirez remained down, writhing in pain and beating the ground with his fist as trainers came to check on him. He did not put any weight on his left leg as he was helped off the field and to the dugout. Greg Dobbs went in at third base and Murphy moved to shortstop after Ramirez left the game. "Its bruised right now, and thats it," Ramirez said. "Were going to wait to see how I feel in the morning, and if Im in a lot of pain, were going to take X-rays." The bruise is on the side of his left shin, above the ankle. "It was scary because he ended up in a very bad position," Rodriguez said. "He came in hard. I thought at first it was the ankle that he might have hyperextended it." Logan Morrisons RBI double in the eighth tied the game for Florida, and Donnie Murphys single sent home the go-ahead run later in the inning. Coghlans solo shot came with two outs in the ninth and pushed the Marlins ahead 4-2. J.R. Towles and Brett Wallace homered for the Astros, who have dropped six of seven to start the season. The pair had three hits apiece. "Anytime theyre able to put together a night like that, thats a big positive in the rright direction for us," Houston manager Brad Mills said. Premier Brett Favre Jersey. . Wandy Rodriguez allowed eight hits and one run in seven innings for Houston. Wilton Lopez (0-1) gave up two runs and four hits in the eighth inning for the loss. "Cant say enough about how he threw the ball," Mills said of Rodriguez. "He was able to throw everything he had for strikes. He put us in a position to win the game, and for himself to win the game, as well. That was sure nice to see." Michael Bourn singled in the eighth and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt before stealing third base. Nolasco retired Hunter Pence and Carlos Lee to escape that jam. The game was tied at 1-1 in the seventh before Chris Johnsons hit to shallow left field scored Wallace and put Houston up 2-1. Wallace doubled on a ball that bounced off the wall in left field to set up the score. After the injury to Ramirez, Jason Michaels grounded into a force out to end the inning. Brett Hayes, who finished with two doubles, made it 1-1 when he scored after Coghlan grounded into a force out in the seventh inning. The Astros got out of that inning when Coghlan was caught stealing. Hayes got on with a double before Nolasco singled to left field. Nolascos hit bounced off the wall in left field and Lee had trouble picking it up, bending down three times before getting hold of the ball. Towles had a solo homer to the Crawford Boxes in left field gave Houston a 1-0 lead in the third inning and Wallaces shot came in the ninth. Gaby Sanchez singled before reaching second on an error by Johnson when he overthrew first base with no outs in the second inning. Rodriguez hit Murphy with a pitch with one out but the Marlins left the inning empty-handed when the Astros turned a double play. Lee was shaken up when he crashed into the left field wall grabbing a fly ball hit from leadoff hitter Coghlan in the first inning. He fell to his knees and remained there for a couple of minutes while Bourn and a trainer checked on him. He finally got up and was able to remain in the game.
