Okotoks, AB
06-18-09

Okotoks is a town just south of Calgary, Alberta in Canada. Because of its close proximity to Calgary and thanks to the many people who choose to commute to their places of employment, Okotoks is often referred to as a bedroom community. Basically, Okotoks acts just like Okotoks storage for people while they sleep. The Blackfoot First Nation gave the town its name which means rock in their native language. The rock that serves as the namesake of the town is located about 8 kilometers west of the town and known as Big Rock. Big Rock is a glacial erratic that was left behind by a glacier that melted long ago. This is believed because the composition of Big Rock is very different from the composition of other local geological finds.

Big Rock used to be used as a marker to find the river crossing across the Sheep River which is located in Okotoks. This was a necessary area for the Natives of this area to hunt buffalo for their meat. They could have used Okotoks storage to preserve the meat in refrigerated units. Unfortunately around 1879, the famed buffalo were no longer to be found in this area as they were hunted down due to the governments leasing of the land to be settled.

If there was an Okotoks storage that stored memorabilia of the history of the town over the years, it would have the signs of the previous names of the town. Okotoks is what was settled on. However, before it was Okotoks, the areas were also called Sheep Creek and Dewdney. While it was not a trade post or a trade hub, back in the day Okotoks was located on a major trade route. The Canadian Pacific Railway which is still in place serves as a main line to the border of the United States for the transport of resources. The line no longer transports passengers.
