Oshawa, compared to other communities of the Greater Toronto Area in Canada is quite large and is actually the 14th largest metropolitan area. The name Oshawa originates from the word aazhaway in Ojibwa which was a dialect spoken by many Algonquians. Aashaway means the carrying place which is a reference to the purpose of the city back in the fur trade days. Oshawa served as a transfer point where the furs after being trapped by the local natives were traded with the Coureur des bois. Along with many other communities that sprang up in this region in the early days of Canadian history, Oshawa storage would have been the perfect place to store the many beaver and other animal pelts that were such a commodity in this era.

Oshawa has had its share of industry changes. After the fur trade died down, a man looking for the next big industry started a business here which involved the export of salmon to the United States. Fur trading and exporting salmon were not the only attempts at industrial greatness for native Oshawans. In the early 1900s, cars began to be manufactured in Oshawa. A few years later, the factory obtained the manufacturing rights needed to fabricate more brands. This seemed like the perfect industrial move for the city as this company went on to merge with another and lent itself out to become one of the largest manufacturers of cars in Canada.
