What kind of season has it been? Well, good and bad and everything in between. The league will always have challenges but it will always have accomplishments, too. Sometimes it is important to look back at the most difficult times to appreciate the good times right now. I will never forget when the Toronto Argonauts and Hamilton Tiger-Cats went into receivership in 2003 and how it made me wonder if there would be CFL football in the years to come. Then-commissioner Tom Wright kept it together and, through personal associations, found Howard Sokolowski and David Cynamon for Toronto as well as Bob Young for Hamilton. Compared to back then, the CFL is doing extremely well. The future challenges are both repetitive and original. The collective bargaining agreement between the players and owners is on the horizon. Both will negotiate for themselves but also look at whats best for the league. I am optimistic that an agreement can be reached because the leadership on both sides are more intelligent then emotional and understand that the integrity of the sport of football is more important than the perfect deal. A secondary issue is the officiating. I thought the refereeing was average at best in the first half of the season but improved in the second half. Consistency and communication on how the games are called will continue to improve. I am confident in saying that because the pressure of TV focuses on mistakes more than ever. Imagine if every mistake you made at work was broadcast across Canada and discussed by others as to why you did what you did and who did it. On the field, the most entertaining aspect of the season was the running backs. Points and touchdowns are down but for me, the identity for every CFL team to have a quality RB took the place of higher scoring games. Most CFL fans gravitate toward the offence. They want to see the same quarterback, running back and receivers every week. With the possible exception of Toronto and maybe Winnipeg, each team has been able to not only entertain by being competitive but also by giving fans identifiable individuals to which fans can relate. This is as important as being competitive because with a familiar face, the players become more than robots; they become people. I like people. The majority are pretty good in character and attitude. It truly is one of the main reasons the ratio should never change. For example, a fan from Alberta can relate more closely with a player from the University of Calgary than they can with a player from Alabama. Finally, the 2009 season was a success because, once again, the Purolator Tackle Hunger program was a success. Back in May, the news was about the the bad economic situation in both Canada and the United States. I had mentally prepared my mind for a disappointing year but the opposite happened.  In six of the eight CFL cities, the food and monetary donations increased and, in the majority of cases, dramatically. The total amount of food raised on game days was 335,600 lbs. This is the most raised by the food drive in one season. The top two cities were Regina, which had an increase of 27,000 lbs. and Hamilton with an increase of 18,600 lbs. So guess who you think I want to be in the Grey Cup on November 29?
