Recently, I went to visit some friends who live about an 1 hour north of Calgary.  They live in a log home that was built in the late 1980s.  They do not have central heat in thier home.  Instead, they use a wood stove.  They have lived in the home for over 10 years, and they enjoy using this method to heat their home.  I asked them where they put all of their wood.  They showed me where it was stored.  They had purchased a storage unit , which they leave on thier property during the cold season.  I told them that was a great idea.  Not only does it store the wood, but it also helps to keep it dry.

What is the difference between self storage in Canada and storage in the United States?  Not much, actually.  Nearly all storage facilities in Canada are modeled after US facilities.  This is mostly due to the history of the storage industry.  When storage units in the United States became popular, most entrepenuers decided to expand into the great north.  They created properties similarly, and began to operate them in the same fashion as well.  The properties in Canada even use feet as the space measurement size, although Canada uses the metric system.

My aunt has a lot of antiques in her home.  She lives in a small house, so there are few places to put most of her antique furniture.  I told her she should put some of her extra heirlooms in a climate controlled storage space.  Climate control units have about the same temperature year round.  They are about room temperature, meaning they protect things from the elements.  I told her that not only would she have more room, but she would also be able to make sure her things are safe.  She has yet to look into it, though.

My grandfather has a TON of ties.  He has been collecting them for over 30 years.  He has a lot of cheesy ones too.  I asked him a while back where he would put his new additions, once his closet was full.  His reply was that he would probably need a 10 by 30 storage unit .  I suggested that he sell some of his lesser used ones.  While he pondered the idea, he finally decided he would keep every tie.  Someday he plans to donate the ties to a charitable cause.  But until that day, they will most likely stay in my grandfathers closet.

I have a lot of boxes .  There are several different sized ones.  Most of them are standard size, alothough I have a few that are VERY large. Im storing my boxes in my attic right now, but I would like to move them somewhere.  The attic is so full, you can't even get past the entrace.  While I could get rid of most of the contents of my attic, I would like to keep the boxes because the items inside have sentimental value.  They are belongings from my Great Grandmothers home.  She passed away several years ago.

I come from a family with a large military background.  Far too often, I have waved off a family member as they head out to fight for freedom.  Although most of my family already had their own homes, they still used storage to keep some of thier items protected.  My cousins also had to store some things, including his vehicle.  At one time, thier were several family members storing in the same local storage facility .  I soon realized that at our local facility, there were over 60 percent military personell storing thier things.
