Having mathematical skills is necessary if you work in the personal storage industry. It is not just about an 8x8 square foot unit that has an 8 foot tall ceiling. If you are dealing with a customer who knows little about storage it may not matter much and they will simply take the advice that the storage specialist recommends.
However this is not the case 100% of the time. You will come across an individual from time to time who wants the low down. Who want to account for every square inch of space in order to get their moneys worth.
Your basic renter will be satisfied enough to know that an 8x8 unit offers 64 square feet. There are the far and few in between that want to know how many cubic feet are in a particular unit. So it helps to know that an 8x8x8 square foot space offers 512 cubic feet.
So, brush up on your mathematical skills if it has been a while. It will come in handy.
If you deal with customers or prospective customers your best bet is to take note. Even the best person who can memorize can easily be distracted from the person they are talking to. Be prepared to answer the phone or make a call by simply having pen and paper handy.
Although you have pen and paper handy, you need to make sure that you take the next proactive step which is to physically take note. Write down what that person says. Not everything, but key points that are most important and will be utilized in searching for information or filling out a form.
You may give a couple of moving quotes for someone storing their stuff at your store. Take note as to when they said they needed it, what their name was and the special you quoted them.
This way you do not have to ask twice and they will know that you have truly listened and cared about what they told you.
People may say they are only interested in the lowest price when it comes to self storage however I just do not see that as the case.
If you are basically offering 2 months free at the time of move in and the person looking for space tells you that they are not ready to get it secured or come in and rent because they want to shop around then there is obviously something wrong here. Do you really think that they can find another location that will possibly offer them 3 months free?
So what is the real reason why they do not want to secure it with you today? You have to ask yourself that.
